The Question Most Procurement Teams Never Ask

[By Dr. Wang, Technical Director | ATHI]

Price. Lead time. Blast wheel count. These are the questions that dominate equipment evaluations.

Nobody asks: Who decided what this machine has to be capable of?

That question has a specific answer for roller conveyor shot blasting equipment sold into the Chinese market — and increasingly, for international project specs that reference Chinese manufacturing baselines. The answer tells you more about a supplier’s actual engineering depth than any product brochure.

For roller conveyor shot blasting machines, that answer traces back to our engineering team in Qingdao.

JB/T 14551-2025 and JB/T 14552-2025: What the New Shot Blasting Machine Standards Actually Govern

In 2025, China’s machinery industry standards body issued two updated shot blasting machine standards that superseded the previous JB/T 9984-2021:

JB/T 14551-2025 covers the roller conveyor shot blasting machine category as a whole — defining performance parameters, design requirements, dust emission limits, and acceptance criteria.

JB/T 14552-2025 is specific to pass-through configurations where workpieces travel continuously through the blast zone. This is the operating principle behind the Q69 series and most roller conveyor shot blasting machines used in structural steel, H-beam, and pipe processing lines.

What these standards actually specify:

  • Cleaning performance: surface cleanliness grades, roughness range (Ra/Rz), and how to verify them
  • Blast wheel requirements: minimum wheel diameter, motor ratings, and abrasive flow specifications
  • Chamber design: wear liner materials, sealing system requirements, blast pattern coverage
  • Dust and emissions: maximum allowable dust concentration at the exhaust point
  • Control and safety: interlock logic, emergency stop requirements, operator protection zones
  • Acceptance testing: the exact test protocol a conforming machine must pass before shipment

These aren’t aspirational guidelines. They’re the contractual floor for what a compliant roller conveyor shot blasting machine must deliver.

What It Actually Means That ATHI Authored These Standards

There are over 400 shot blasting equipment manufacturers in China. A subset of them can legitimately claim compliance with JB/T 14551-2025 and JB/T 14552-2025.

One organization led the drafting committee: ATHI.

This isn’t a marketing claim. ATHI’s role is documented in the published standard texts and verifiable on China’s national standards registry at std.samr.gov.cn. We also serve on TC186, the National Technical Committee for Foundry Machinery Standardization, where we contributed to related terminology and testing methodology standards.

The practical implications for buyers:

The performance benchmarks reflect what we already build. The efficiency thresholds, dust limits, and cleaning grades in these standards were derived from ATHI’s engineering data — not set as aspirational targets we then had to meet. When you evaluate a Q69 roller conveyor shot blasting machine against the standard, you’re measuring it against criteria our machines helped define.

We know where the standards are heading. Standards revision is ongoing. As a drafting participant, we have visibility into the direction of future updates — tighter VOC and dust limits, higher automation requirements, energy efficiency thresholds. Our current roller conveyor shot blasting machine lineup is engineered with that trajectory in mind, not just current compliance.

Third-party verification is straightforward. Ask any supplier to show you their documented role in standard development. If they can’t point to a specific standard number and a verifiable registry entry, “we meet the standard” is an unverifiable marketing statement.

International Projects: Standards That Apply Beyond JB/T

JB/T standards govern the Chinese domestic market. For international structural steel and pipeline projects, specifications typically reference:

  • ISO 8501-1 — surface cleanliness grades (Sa 2.5 is the most commonly required; our Q69 roller conveyor shot blasting machine achieves Sa 3 in standard configuration)
  • SSPC-SP standards — U.S. project specifications, particularly for infrastructure and offshore applications
  • NORSOK M-501 — Norwegian offshore coating system standard, frequently specified for subsea and topside structural components
  • EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC — required for equipment installed in European facilities

CE marking is standard on all ATHI export machines. For projects with specific international coating system requirements, our applications engineering team reviews project specs before order confirmation.

Before You Send an RFQ

If you’re evaluating roller conveyor shot blasting machines for a structural steel, pipe, or H-beam processing application, two documents are worth requesting from any shortlisted supplier:

  1. Their compliance documentation for JB/T 14551-2025 / JB/T 14552-2025
  2. Their test protocol and acceptance criteria for the specific machine you’re quoting

The gap between what a supplier claims and what they can document under the current shot blasting machine standard is one of the most reliable indicators of engineering quality.

We’re glad to share the relevant standard sections, walk through how they apply to your application, or review an existing project specification.
